REIKI
PRE-SURVEY: Qualtrics Pre-Survey: MUST COMPLETE PRIOR TO READING FURTHER!
Reiki is an energy healing technique that promotes relaxation, reduces stress and anxiety through gentle touch. Reiki practitioners use their hands to deliver energy to your body, improving the flow and balance of your energy to support healing.
Mikao Usui (from Japan) developed reiki in the early 1900s, deriving the term from the Japanese words rei, meaning “universal,” and ki, which refers to the vital life force energy that flows through all living things.

Assigned Readings and Video
Does Reiki Benefit Mental Health Symptoms Above Placebo?
Reiki may be more effective in treating some areas of mental health, than placebo, particularly if symptoms are clinically relevant.
To date, there are a small number of studies in each area, therefore findings are inconclusive and, more RCTs controlling for placebo in Reiki research are needed.
Most included studies were also assessed as having a risk of bias of some concern. Incorporating Reiki as a complementary treatment to mainstream psychotherapy for depression, stress, and anxiety may be appropriate.
Reiki has been shown to improve outcomes in non-human subjects: rats, dogs.
A Large-Scale Effectiveness Trial of Reiki for Physical and Psychological Health
The results from this large-scale multisite effectiveness trial suggest that a single session of Reiki improves multiple variables related to physical and psychological health.

YOGA
YOGA PRE-SURVEY: Qualtrics Pre-Survey: MUST COMPLETE PRIOR TO READING FURTHER!
Yoga, an ancient practice that originated in the India over 5,000 years ago. The word "yoga" itself is derived from the Sanskrit word "yuj," meaning to yoke or unite, reflecting the core principle of harmonizing physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), meditation (dhyana), and ethical principles (yamas and niyamas).
There are many forms of yoga practices including Vinyasa, Kundalini, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Kaonah, Yin Yoga, and Restorative.

Assigned Readings:
yoga interventions improve multiple physical function and HRQoL outcomes in this population compared to both control conditions. This study provides robust evidence for promoting yoga in physical activity guidelines for older adults as a multimodal activity that improves aspects of fitness like strength, balance and flexibility, as well as mental wellbeing.
After evaluating 23 randomised clinical trials (comprising 22 different samples) with a total of 1420 participants, we observed that yoga-based interventions may reduce anxiety symptoms in anxiety disorders. Further-
more, we also found that yoga-based interventions may decrease depression symptoms in depressive disorders. However, we cannot make definitive clinical recommendations due to the very low certainty of the evidence, several methodological concerns and the heterogeneity of qigong, tai chi and yoga styles among
studies. Therefore, a specific yoga style cannot be recommended with the current evidence. A call for action for improving the quality of research in this field is needed.
yoga training can be an acceptable and appropriated adjunctive rehabilitation program for COPD patients
Yoga for Substance Use: A Systematic Review
Yoga has been studied in SUDs and has been found to reduce stress and addictive behaviors while improving self-esteem and increasing self-control.
While the exact mechanisms of action are unclear, the use of yoga as a treatment for substance use disorder has been found to decrease addictive behaviors, enhance well-being, and improve cognitive flexibility.
Yoga and heart rate variability: A comprehensive review of the literature
yoga INCREASES heart rate variability which is a proxy for overall health and fitness and indicator of autonomic regulation
The Efficacy and Safety of Yoga in Managing Hypertension
Although yoga has been associated with serious adverse events in single case reports, population-based surveys as well as clinical trials indicate that yoga is a relatively safe intervention that is not associated with more adverse events than other forms of physical activity.

Integrative Medicine Track
Our residency program offers two exciting programs in Integrative Medicine.
IM AOC - Integrative Medicine Area of Concentration includes 3 months of elective, one month in your PGY2 year (usually a home elective), and two months in your PGY3 year (usually one away elective and one home elective). If you choose the IM AOC, this would be in addition to the IMT. Alternatively, you can do the IMT below and choose a different AOC.
IMT - The Integrative Medicine Track is an elective 3-year longitudinal program. You can do this track and choose a different AOC if you prefer. The IMT is a great program for those who are interested in developing a foundational understanding of integrative care models, learning whole-health methods for chronic disease/pain management, and improving your preventive care strategies. It's also a great preparatory program if you're interested in doing an IM fellowship and/or incorporating integrative medicine into your post-residency practice.
Info about the Integrative Medicine Track:
The educational foundation of the IMT is based on the University of Arizona's Integrative Medicine in Residency (IMR) online program (http://integrativemedicine.arizona.edu/education/imr.html). The entire online program takes roughly 180-200 hours to complete including module exams and a final exam.
It offers experiential group activities throughout your time in residency. Examples of past activities include a private group yoga class, meditation class at a dharma center, mind-body medicine talks, a sound bath, an online anti-inflammatory food cook-a-thon, and learning about herbs/botanicals/supplements at a local herb shop.
You get the opportunity to work directly with Dr. Krishna Desai in the Integrative Medicine Consult Clinic (IMCC).
The IMT includes personal mentoring and development of personal wellness plans and communing with like-minded individuals.
Upon completion of the curriculum, you will receive a certificate from the University of Arizona at graduation.
Please note, this is an elective program IN ADDITION to your regular residency training.
When you join the IMT, you are making a commitment to complete the IMR online curriculum and other requirements by the end of your PGY3 year.
