Rotation Goals and Objectives
Rotation Goals:
1. Obtain essential and accurate info about the patient (hx, pe, labs, imaging, other tests/consults)
2. Interpret all info to make informed diagnoses and decisions about subsequent interventions.
3. Accurately diagnose common acute pediatric problems
4. Develop and carry out management plans while organizing and prioritizing responsibilities to provide care that is safe effective and efficient
- Identify conditions that necessitate specialist consultation and clearly identify the question for the specialist
- Learn how to prescribe medications for common pediatric problems.
4. Demonstrate initiative, proactive learning, and an investigatory and analytical approach to the clinical situation based on scientific principles and the use of information technology/resources. Demonstrate outstanding communication and interpersonal skills by working effectively and appropriately with patients, families, and colleagues across a broad range of socioeconomic, cultural, and educational backgrounds while maintaining a climate of team playing, mutual respect, and trust
- Clearly and concisely present verbally as well as write notes on patients cared for
- Comprehensively plan a patient’s discharge including follow-up
- Effectively counsel and create therapeutic relationships with patients and their families regardless of race culture language and sexual orientation
6. Demonstrate compassion, integrity, advocacy for quality care, and preservation of privacy and respect to a patient population diverse in gender, age, culture, race, religion, disabilities, and sexual orientation.
7. Show accountability for your actions and demonstrate trustworthiness that makes colleagues feel secure when one is responsible for a patient’s care.
- Attend all scheduled shifts and report punctually
Learning opportunities:
In addition to the above, depending on the flow of the Emergency Department and the discretion of your supervising physician, you may have the following opportunities:
Observe or help in the resuscitation of an ill child
Learn to place a patient on a cardiorespiratory monitor and perform diagnostic tests such as an ECG (1.1)
Perform therapeutic and minor surgical procedures considered essential for the area of practice (splinting, suturing) (1.1)

Before Your Rotation Begins:

❏ Consider your R3P/QI goals for this month
Rotation Assignments:
❏ Send Ramona a list of attendings that you have worked with so that she may send evaluations to them. Please send them throughout the rotation so that they may be assigned sooner when the attending experience is still fresh in their mind.
❏ Give attendings a “heads-up” that they will receive an electronic request to complete an evaluation
❏ Request feedback daily from attending regarding any areas for improvement

4. The resident is able to demonstrate accountability for his/her actions and trustworthiness that makes one’s colleagues feel secure when he/she is responsible for a patient’s care.
